Jim started his career with Merrill Lynch in 1972. When he left Merrill Lynch in 1975, he was the top revenue producer in his peer group in the entire firm. He then spent over eight years with Texas Commerce Bank (now JP Morgan Chase) where he rose to be the head of commercial lending for Texas and the surrounding states.
He returned to the securities industry in 1985, joining Paine Webber as Senior Vice President where he met Tim Vos. In January 1988, Jim and Tim became partners at Paine Webber. Their partnership thrived and they were recruited by Prudential Securities in 1992. In 1994, they left Prudential Securities to form Monroe Vos.

Jim graduated from Texas Christian University with a B.B.A. in 1967. He held the IMCA Certified Investment Management Analyst® (CIMA®) certification from 1989 until September 30, 2012. He is a past Chairman of the Board of Directors and founder of Monroe Capital, LLC, the holding company for what is called, Newport Academy in Orange County, California and Bethlehem, Connecticut. Newport Academy is a mental health, substance, drug and alcohol recovery center for adolescents. He is a past Director of the United Methodist Men’s Foundation and the Investment Management Consultants Association (IMCA, now called Investments & Wealth Institute). He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the National Math and Science Initiative, a non-profit organization focused on improving minority student performance in the subjects of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in the United States.
He has been a guest speaker for various organizations including the Investment Management Consultants Association, the Financial Executive Institute, the American Society of Pension Actuaries and the Southern Employee Benefits Conference. He has been interviewed on the subject of investment management consulting by numerous publications including Plan Sponsor Magazine, The Monitor, Registered Representative, Senior Consultant Magazine, Institutional Investor, Journal of Pension Plan Investing, Money Management Letter and Defined Contribution Plan Investing.
